Homeward Bound – We’re Stoppin’ at Valley Pecan

Saturday morning, 9/22.  Hated to say goodbye to family so soon.  Our six year old granddaughter, Breanna, lost her first tooth just before we left for home – isn’t she cute?  A quick family breakfast served up with goodbye hugs and kisses at the local Cracker Barrel, and a quick stop at the Cracker Barrel in West Monroe, Louisiana to pick up some LSU gear for us and the California grandsons.  We stayed the night in Decatur, Texas in time to watch LSU beat Auburn – we were lucky to squeak by and have our tigers beat their tigers.  (In case you can’t tell, we’re LSU fans.)

Had fun on Sunday.  First stop was one of our favorite roadstands, Valley Pecan in Chillicothe, Texas.  All kinds of goodies here – lots of pecans and pecan products as you might guess by the name.  They also have home decor, Texas wine, cookbooks galore and make their own fudge – dang good is written on their t-shirts - and, they’re right – it’s dang good.  Picked up a couple of pieces of fudge, a variety of pecan butters and some pecan oil to try.         We tried to buy a bottle of wine to see what that’s like, but Texas has a crazy law that says stores can’t sell liquor until after 12:00 noon on Sunday.  We were too early - and couldn’t wait around.  Note to self – next time, visit on a different day.

We drove into Albuequerque about 6:30 p.m. and stopped at what has become one of our favorite rest stops - Route 66 Casino.     They had  an Elvis slot machine and Sandy was in heaven – except that she lost.  Luckily, Randy won and we left even and with a full belly after eating dinner.       Made it to Gallup for the night.

The rest of the trip was uneventful with no time to stop and search out new places.  We hit a little rain in Flagstaff, Arizona – just enough to make the air smell fresh and clean.    Randy still has that day job thing and has to report to work on Tuesday morning so we need to keep driving except for the occasional gas and/or pit stop.

Arrived home a little tired but we’re already talking about our upcoming trips.  Heading to Paso Robles, California wine country during harvest weekend at the end of October and a longer road trip the last two weeks in November to Three Rivers, Michigan to visit more Shuman family for Thanksgiving.  We’ll be revisiting a couple of favorite Pearl’s Picks and looking for new ones while in that area.  We should also have time on the way home to make a stop in Sandy’s home town of Rock Island, Illinois and reminisce and maybe search out some new Picks between Michigan and California.  I’m sure there are a lot out there we don’t know about so, please, send us your suggestions.

Stay tuned – we’ll keep you up to date.
