In the beginning…
8:00 a.m. In the beginning, the back part of our property was full of cars. For years, we allowed customers of a nearby hair salon to park there. But, after a number of fence poles were bent, the storage shed’s door was hit, and our lemon tree was killed in a hit-and-run, we’d had enough. Today, the parking lot is empty. But, what now? What do we do with all this space so that it’s not a barren wasteland of concrete? A conversation is in order.
5:30 p.m. – our usual time to sit down together and catch up has arrived - the perfect opportunity for our discussion. It’s taken only a little time, and a middling amount of wine, to come up with what we’ve decided is the perfect solution. GARDEN BEDS!! Yes, that’s it – GARDEN BEDS! We’ll grow our own food – and it will be real food, grown organically with no chemicals – just like Sandy used to do it in the 1970′s. Yeah! That’s it! Randy’s on board as long as there’s the promise of mid-western sweet corn growing in there somewhere.
So, now we know what we want to do, but, how do we do it? We don’t want to tear out a zillion yards of concrete – that would be much too hard. With a bit of further discussion, (and, a little more wine) we decided to build RAISED GARDEN BEDS! Of course, neither of us have ever built anything before, but how hard can it be, right? Where there’s a will, there’s a way and we’re both smart, hard-working adults – we can figure this out – just not tonight. It’s dinnertime and we’re hungry. At least we have an idea – that’s enough for now.
I love reading this!
Thanks, Elise. We love writing it!
